In today’s post we are going to teach you an easy way to pick up stitches from a piece made in double crochet to form a border. This is very common when we are going to finish off blankets or make the front edges of jackets, for example. Let’s get started!

For this tutorial we chose to work with a skein of our Easy Breezy yarn and a size 8 (5 mm) crochet hook.

As usual, before beginning, we give you a list of the stitches we are going to use in case you need a quick review or have any doubts:

We’ll start with a swatch worked in double crochet for our explanation.

We will locate the left edge of our fabric: that is where we will begin to crochet the edge of our garment.

You will work the edge with the wrong side of the fabric facing you.

The first thing you have to do is chain one as the turning chain.

Along the entire edge we will be working single crochet, remember that for each row we have of double crochet, we have to work two single crochets on the edge of it. In the image above you have marked one of the rounds: that is where you should work your two single crochets. You must repeat this process for each double crochet row.

You have to repeat the process above until you reach the end of the border.

Once you have finished the first row, chain one and continue working the rest of the rows in single crochet as usual. If you don’t want to do the rest of the border in this stitch, you can combine with other types of stitches. You have probably seen many garments finished with a row of small scallops or ruffles 🙂

We hope this quick step-by-step tutorial on how to pick-up edge stitches made with double crochet will be very useful to finish off your crochet garments. Don’t forget to share your projects with us on social networks using the hashtag #weareknitters. We love to see them!
